If The Night Be Silent

smooth christmas jazz
slithers down from the ceiling
tidings of good will and holiday cheer
permeate the air
god, i want to die

my wife sleeps alone tonight
like so many nights before
it’s become nothing for us now
we’ve forgotten the feeling of
waking with the rising sun

my daughter, my most precious
she is becoming lost in a cloud of despair
torn from her friends, dreams in disarray
and all i can offer her
is please hold on a little longer

now come the hollow strings
straining to pour oh silent night
over my hopeless soul
yes, if the night was silent-
if the night was silent i would cry no more
