First love

She's wonderful---I've said it now,
and in so doing am relieved;
but having said it, wonder how
this bold remark will be received.

She's beautiful---again I'm bold,
but being bold may earn reproach,
for many women, I've been told,
prefer a less direct approach.

I like her--yes, this much is so,
but am I wrong to make the claim?
And am I wrong to want to know
if she could ever feel the same?

I love her---there can be no doubt,
the truth is plain for all to see;
but I care not, for once it's out
the truth can only set me free.

She loves me, too? Oh, happy day!
Be still the beating of my heart!
(But, truth be told, I have to say
I knew she loved me from the start.)
