Lest we Forget
In foreign ground they laid me, I’m so very far from home
Bright poppies sway and dance while moisture drips on cloth and bone
So long ago - but I recall, the sunshine on my face
I stood with brothers side by side, to take and hold this place
The fear ran through me, bristling, and my fear was not alone
We forged our hearts. We held our nerve, for mates, and kin and home
The bombs and bullets screamed out ‘death!’ Ears aching from the din
From even deeper depths I dug, to steel myself within
A whistle blew - we dragged ourselves, from trench and mud and grime
Then ran at pace with raging face, to end this awful crime
It came to me from place unknown a burning pain in side
In tangled wire I stumbled, fell - and slowly there I died
With fading eye I saw them, charging bravely to the fray
My heart with glorious pride fulfilled, then all life drained away
And now I lay in this cold place, with headstone up above
Does someone come to visit me, and think of me with love
Does anyone remember me - anyone at all
Perhaps we’re all just pictures aging, fading on a wall
Do countrymen come to this place, I know it’s far away
Perhaps they’ll come just once a year, perhaps one special day
To sit down here beside me, and to think of all we gave
To contemplate their freedom and the sacrifice we made
I hope they do, I pray it’s true, if not its all in vein
Lest we forget, all lessons lost, and happen all again

A well written poem
A very well written poem told in a different way, on a subject that shouldn't be forgotten, I recently went to an American World War 2 cemetery in Cambridge, England, it was very moving looking at rows and rows of headstones thinking each of these was a person killed, kind of put it into perspective. Well done.

Lest we forget
Thanks Andrew. I appreciate the feedback. The inspiration came from going to an ANZAC dawn service two weeks ago then looking on my wall at my grandfather standing next to his bi-plane.
Again, thanks for the feedback. It's appreciated.
