When Dinky Held the Pub

Two days out of Melbourne
Heading north for Darwin town
Driving up the middle
Through some dry and barren ground

Tired from all the driving
And although I’d done my best
The sun was slowly sinking
And I need place to rest

As we pulled in I felt relief
I’m feeling kind of rub
I’ll have a kip but first of all
We’ll have ourselves some grub

So in we go to meet the boss
And organise ourselves
Then settle down for beer and food
And check out ‘Stuart Wells’

The boss man said that’s ‘Dinky’
And it was to my surprise
A dingo stood in front of me
Right there before my eyes

He jumped on the piano
Proud as punch for all to see
And as he sat he gave a stare
and threw a wink at me

Who’ll have a go the boss man said
Who’ll tap the ivory keys
For he’ll chip in and sing a tune
He’s always keen to please

It was a sight and what a sound
He howled and yowled and wailed
He stretched his neck
And pursed his lips
As higher notes he scaled

It really was such fun to see
As I ate up me grub
No better way to end the day
