Six Foot Deep
So on my death, for which we all are bound,
Just drop my body into the ground,
And if anyone can muster a word that's true,
Then speak of me as I would of you.
At Pearly Gates I won't expect a key,
Think St Peter will shake his head at me,
Losing sight of that hallowed goal,
I pay the price with my tattered soul.
My life, though short, was full and free,
Now a Maker to meet, my final destiny,
Met many people, but friends were few,
Some were unmissable, some were untrue.
So many questions, so little time,
Will knowledge come with release sublime?
Hand on heart, I tried my best,
Even when best was worst and cut through my chest.
If I thought I was right, I saw it through to the end,
I'm sure I wasn't always, but that's life my friend,
Ol' blue eyed Frank sang "Regrets, I have a few",
I've none too many as I bid this world adieu.
So lay me down, six foot deep,
Where I can rest in eternal sleep,
Grieve and cry, but not for long,
Go live your life and find a new song.
And if by chance Peter lets me in,
After all my wrongs and all my sin,
And I walk on clouds drifting in radiant blue,
Not one of Heavens angels will compare to you.

I love this piece because its so honest. I think we all might be a bit worried Peter might not let us "in"...I know I am...
I can muster up alot of great, true, words to say about you David Gibbs. You are a good man with a big heart!
So easy to see even though we've never met. so, if im ever standing over you when they lower you in the ground, i will say that.
Very nice write Dave

Charmer!!Lol
Thanks Linda, it's just a few thoughts on the dark subject of death, guess we all think about it at some time or another!
Thanks for reading and for the charming comments.........now how much did we say? Ha ha
Dave
LOL
Dave, I'd say all those charming comments for free. Because it's all so true!

:*)
this is well done
but what is it with the poetry of good byes. It really does seem to lend itself well to words and feelings, the last line is a surprise but I suppose good bye is always to someone. raskin
Thank You
raskin, I think you have a good point, there is a lot of poetry about death, but as you say, it does lend itself well to words.
Interesting that you picked up on the last line, this piece was never meant to be for anyone in particular, but when I was writing it, certain parts just aimed at a special someone in my life without me really noticing! Not the most observant person so won't be looking for a job with the police!
Maybe we do feel the need to say a proper goodbye to someone special? Maybe I shouldn't worry about that and just be grateful I have someone to say goodbye too!!
Anyway, thanks for taking the time to read and comment, much appreciated,
Dave
Interesting
An interesting write here Dave. I like the introspection, and evaluation of one's life. Its good to take stock, reflect and see things for what they are. Again, I like the honesty about the piece and the value of things, but was kind of expecting more of a stronger ending. No offence, and I hope you know what I mean here.
DEbs
Thanks Debs
No offence taken, I always value comments from you. Funny that raskin mentioned the end of this piece as well, maybe it should have ended differently?
When I wrote this I can say honestly that I didn't know where it would end up! Raskin mentioned about saying goodbye to someone, that made me think a bit! Maybe subconsciously I would just like to be able to say goodbye to one person before I go, maybe, if I was really lucky, it would be the girl that I'm with now, (probably be more than a bit shit for her, but this is all hyperthetical). Shows to me how much of a profound effect she has had on my life.
Hope some of this rambling explains something! Think this is probably the hardest reply I've ever had to write on here (possibly one of the most boring too!)
Thanks for reading Debs, as before, your comments always appreciated,
Dave
Not Boring!
Not boring at all Dave. I'm always interesting to hear what you have to say. This one was a hard subject to cover, and if it had been me it would brought up all kinds of memories. Its great that you've taken something new from your write and maybe use this idea for another-'The importance of love to you? An interesting subject to explore.

There is no doubt in my mind that this is the best piece of yours that I have read. I'm sure that we shall all quake at the sight of Peter at the gates for life is full of temptations and the flesh is weak.
Pete
Thanks Pete
