Chingl-ai (China-English Love)
I have left my heart
In the high, high sky
That you might still see
When I’m gone, close by;
And I took your love
When you slept, sound, deep
And carried love away
Like a robber in your sleep.
I wrapped it in feathers
And put it in a sack,
Hid it in a forest, then
Carried on my back,
Took a peek at nightshine
Saw the feathers heave,
Heard a little sigh then:
‘Why did you leave?’
And my tears flew wide
To the river, so long
That the banks ran over
‘Til the people were gone,
I’m a one man only
Like a dark, dark star
While you sky light morning
With a face-cream jar.
I loved you then
Like I love you now
Like a heart that bursts
On an old ship’s prow;
Though I had to leave
When the moon went round
I will love you forever
‘Til the sun burns down.

Chingl-ai
Thanks for your kind comments. The Chinese experience was an incredible one for me, and it opened pathways in poetry when I thought that I had just about written myself out. So your appreciation means a great deal.
