Not Even a Lesser Guitar God

The drummer is fixing Zildjans
To his cymbal stand boom
Another adjusts his amp’s volume
To ensure it won’t drown the room
The keyboard man is helping me tune
My Fender Strat’s lower E
Won’t be long before I’m sure
It sounds like I want it to be.

The singer is gargling his larynx
With a glass of cheap vodka
To ensure that when he sings
It’s strong enough to be at par
The dance hall is cold and empty
Except for the lone electrician
And with 3As in advanced GCE
Is this the correct place for me?

At the third set the singer loses his voice
It’s his throat, can’t hit a high note
I need to make lots of noise
My Strat and Hiwatt
With it’s two stacks below
Can turbulence lots of air
And I’m learning, blow by blow
Rudiments of how to play

The rhythm section comes on
And I’m not playing too bad
But today’s my last day in this town
I’m ready to listen to dad
Buy grad books settle down
My fingers move fast on the guitar neck
The drunks, whistle and applaud more
Some even compare me to Jeff Beck
When I’m a journeyman music whore

I’m in it just for the beer
And a Saturday night lay
Perhaps some Sunday cheer
For my six hour play
So you drunken sods
Open your ears and hear
I’m not even a little Lucifer
To a horde of lesser guitar gods.

The content

This piece is written to parallel what a young man would be doing in his gap year in the seventies. It's unstructured and disjointed reflecting a young man's thinking at eighteen.

Cheers

Interesting

Interesting write dolan. I must admit i was becoming quite absorbed in the technical aspects towards the beginning because my husband plays Bass, and me acoustic. Its always interesting to try to gather 'a feeling' that represents that time or year of life, and for this young man you reflected it well. The closing line is a perfect ending for this piece i feel.

Thanks

Thanks, Debs. People need to remember how it was, and those that touched their earlier lives. This was one of those pieces
