The Way It Used to Be
We spoke in old English
Quoted Hemingway and Shakespeare
We dropped 70's phrases
Discussed history till none remained unspoken
Oh yes, we complimented each other
Like black and white
Day and night
We spoke nonsense
We read from no Great Book
We worshiped no one, but the writers of our books
We talked for hours
On and on
Never wanting to cease our discussions
We said things only we understood
We shared secrets
We dare not whisper to other ears
A bond was made
How glorious it was
It was more than enough
For one of us
For he, it was not
And I have finally accepted that.
