Love Remains

You're my muse
Recurrent theme stalking my mind
What to do?
How will it go?
Are questions haunting
Not promising a kind answer...

Yet I could go on performing the same
Searching vainly for variations on the dull routine
But after seeing you
Albeit briefly
My heart still remains tightly
Grasped in your hands
No matter how clever I try
To defend the swirling emotions
In your presence with a conditioned response
I'm still in love with you...

We could go on beating ourselves
Into a bloody pulp
For not preventing the inevitable clash
Between complacency and fear
The latter concept I perversely hold dear
No, you weren't cavalier
Or reincarnated as Walter Mitty
You had a purpose
And damn the naysayers who predicted
A crash and burn
You weren't moving on to please them
Wish I had the same sublime confidence
Ironically, I do, it was just hidden
Beneath a pile of the most foul manure and
As I toss it away with pick and shovel
I realize how empty my life has become
As I prepare to do the unexpected
I hope and solemnly pray that you will
Forgive the error of my ways
Allow a new day to seep in
Through the blinding haze
Where love remains...
