There are things as humans we are not meant to understand
Like why Mother Nature would allow destruction beyond what we can comprehend
Yet we can grasp what it means to lose
And most of the time it’s not ours to choose
It happens when we expect it least
Loved ones swallowed whole by a horrible beast
Families torn to pieces with no chance to reunite
Despair instantly replaces happiness with no relief in sight
We look to something else other than ourselves to blame
To think otherwise would place unbearable shame
Days like these beg the rest of us to stare darkness down in the face
If nothing else the world needs to replace disbelief with grace
Because all these people are just like you and I
And just like us they do not deserve to die
