An Affair on the District Line

Grey afternoon light draws all hue from your face
Dark as day fades and I leave your embrace
Fair skin becomes blue for bare naked you lay
As I steal through your blinds though longing to stay

Some pyrrhic victory - day long affair
As I slept wrapped around you entwined in your hair
And in winning part of you lost all of me
To guilt and dishonour, to bald vanity

For sure you beguiled me with magic unseen
As we sat on the tube with the route coloured green
As some ancient enchantress a siren I guess
Like Nimue with glasses and that demure dress

How shyly it seemed when we spoke of some book
I’d pretended to read whilst really I looked
Legs lean clad with red leather boots to your knees
Cool glance over spectacles certain to tease

Off, up the stairwell out into the light
For a drink and a chat and a light lunch-time bite
Then laughing our way to your bed-sit the thought
“How perfect, this girl who lives in Baron’s Court”

Soft was the eiderdown fierce your caress
Immodest black mane – ripping your dress
Then ‘til we were covered in salt crusted rime
We fucked and we fucked and we fucked as if time

Would come to its ending if ever we slowed
Our world in a vacuum hard wired to implode
But still you sleep on as I glide down the stairs
Curs’ed are lovers and secret affairs
