Green-Eyed Girl

From atop the hill, there can be heard,
A lonely bell’s lamented words.
From atop that hill, a breeze does sing—
Crooning softly, herald of spring.
On a brick-laid bridge, a figure stands.
Whispered winds caress her hands.
Her gray green eyes, glowing gold rays find—
Rays mirrored—dancing—eyes that shine.
Glazed with longing, passionate tears that gleam,
Her gaze is lost, trapped in her dreams.
Somewhere deep within her soul,
Secrets lurk, all left untold—
Love and desires she’d never confide,
Hidden beneath, held on the inside.
Still she cries for the world, falling apart;
Cries for the soul that has stolen her heart.
Don’t change the world; just save one soul;
Her mind’s been set on her heart’s true goal;
Set upon a memory—of a face with sweet brown eyes
That wouldn’t listen, wouldn’t love, and never would say why.
Standing on a bridge, nowhere else to go;
Staring through the sunset, all she’s ever known.
The sun starts slipping as the night grows late.
She has no hope, yet still she stands in wait;
Waiting for a soul to come;
Her colors fade, as does the sun.
Gray eyes turn upward—heaven—pleading;
Unspoken words—confessing—needing.
Silent prayers and pain entwine—
Weave together; shadowed eyes don’t shine.
Left alone, shattered dreams will die;
Shadowed eyes don’t shine, but they sure can cry.
Broken knees sink to the ground;
With no ears to hear, there can be no sound.
Kneeling on a bridge, nowhere else to go;
Staring through the darkness, all she’s ever known.
No words can ever promise the sun will rise again;
Broken on a bridge, and this could be the end.
Strangled sighs become lethal cries—
Unheard, unknown, unrecognized.
A ray of light falls upon her hair;
A ray of hope on a life of despair.
From the horizon, the sun’s rays outpour;
Gray eyes salute darkness, but the sunrise, ignore.
Along with the light, quiet footsteps grow near;
Gray eyes remain frozen, though the ears surely can hear.
And then all is quiet, when the footsteps arrive;
The owner’s hand finds the shoulder, the only other alive.
Kneeling on the bridge, the figure finally stands;
Turns about to face the light and shrugs away the hand.
Gray green eyes meet a brown-eyed stare;
Silence has spoken and seizes the air.
She’s searching for a soul within;
Unspoken questions pouring in.
The sun, enthroned, sits overhead—
Steady gaze, and words unsaid.
To look upon that face—how long did those green eyes wait?
They finally have the chance, but the chance has come to late.
From atop the hill, there rings a bell—
Breaks the silence; breaks the spell
Green eyes blink, and, with no words to say,
She steps back, turns, and walks away;
Silent steps find the bridge’s other side;
Followed solely by a gaze—lonely sweet brown eyes.
Shadows hit the ground as the sun falls to the Earth;
Don’t ever underestimate how much your love is worth.
Because when they’re left alone, shattered dreams will die;
Brown shadowed eyes don’t shine, and green eyes no longer cry.
The only figure on the bridge is the brown-eyed one alone;
He stares into the darkness, ‘cause now it’s all he’ll ever know.
Tears shed for a green-eyed girl, his one true love he never told;
He watched his world walk away and leave him with a broken soul.

Found it, read it, liked it, loved it

This poem... It's fantastic. So true to life and, thus, true to love. So true because I am standing there along side your brown eyed man, it's a party of screw-ups. We all raign as king there. Hope all that follow are just as beautiful to read.
For all it's worth...

Lost for words

I am speechless after reading this epic poem. At the mention of bridge I thought it was going to end like Thomas Hood's "Bridge of Sighs" but this is much better, it gives hope.

Best of luck,

Dolan
