An Ending

-I-

A light filled horizon
The heavens aflame
As we pointlessly cower
To hide from our shame
In a handful of minutes
Our short lives will expire
With the ruins of Earth
As our funeral pyre

Our time ends in silence
And blinding white light
As our terrified souls
Are cast into the night
But while screaming, remember
That we're more blessed than some
For at least we've escaped
All the horrors to come

-II-

A new-orphaned child
With her hair in a mess
Her olive skin melded
To her pretty red dress
Without any to help her
She takes to her tasks
But with useless blue eyes
She silently asks

"Why did they do it?
What did they believe?
And what higher purpose
Could they hope to achieve?
Unleashing the power
Of ten thousand suns
They've ended my future
'Fore its even begun".

Her family she buries
In the shallowest graves
On planks of old wood
She scratches their names
Her last mission over
And her time come to rest
She falls dead in the gutter
In the tattered red dress

-III-

The black snow falls softly
And with infinite grace
Like a never-known lover
It caresses her face
But she never more stirs
As the world turns to ice
Only insects are left now
To consider the price

And when it's all over
The dust has come down
And even the cockroach
Has surrendered its crown
There comes but a whisper
From a crimson-clad ghost
"It was clearly we humans
Who deserved it the most"

An Ending

Excellent!
A poignant characterisation of an unimagineable,(and therefore indescribable) occurrence.
