The subtle knife

I am the subtle knife that glides
Between the tendon and the bone
I am the thoughtful blade that slides
From what was hoped to what is known

I am the darkness in the light
The morning sunset, evening dawn
I see your struggle razor-bright
Your direst need, compassion shorn

For steel was made to cut both ways
A neutral tool, with balance wrought
But I have lived ten thousand days
And on each one, have violence sought

In you, my lover I confide
Joy sickens me, I long for strife
Before my fall, we must decide
If I bring death, or you take life

I am

Powerful, tight images! The "I am" is quite a statement of identity.
