Silken Cheeks and a Rough Blanket
Written by Joyce Greene
3/27/08
I sing of a mother's ecstasy,
First touching her newborn's skin
Fingers caress silken cheeks,
Whispered sighs of awe-struck love.
I delight in a newborn's elation,
Feeling mother's first soft strokes
Pristine skin alive with bliss,
Joyful cries of his first love.
I suffer with a mother's agony,
Leaving son at a church door
Fingers pried from the basket,
Ugly groans of drugged up love.
I weep for a newborn's misery,
Barely touched by mother's hands
Skin chafed by a rough blanket,
Soundless death of unborn love.

great poem Joyce
As it says A Mother`s Joy and Mothers Misery, one at each end of the scales, very well written one that is truly cherished and another left maybe for reasons we cannot bear to imagine,a poem written with such a lot of feeling and compassion, which touched my heart Joyce well done from Willow.
thank you, willow
I am getting so much out of belonging to this web site. It is wonderful to be able to express these feelings. I am so glad you liked this poem, as I have enjoyed so many of yours!

Thankyou Joyce for your kind words about my poems I like yours also yes it is good to express oneself through verse,I cannot think of a better way,it is a kind of release and very good for you to write things down. from Willow
touching
I have read that an untouched baby can actually die. I was so hurt by that idea that I decided I wanted to write about it. Many of us don't realize how important human touch is to everyone. It may be part of our reproductive needs, but I think it is more than that - it is part of the foundation of our emotional health. Touching others through poetry is a great way of reaching out.
