The Black Widow

The Black Widow mates,
A crimson hourglass timing
His final minutes,
Climax and an afterthought,
She slowly eats her lover.

UMMMMM

Joyce,

Sounds like "afterplay" to me. I much prefer "foreplay" if I can have my druthers.

endgame for the poor male...

there was a news story on this morning about a woman who may have killed all five of her husbands, ugh!
Thanks for reading and commenting.

word choice

I like the way your use of the word "climax" signals that this tanka is not just about spiders. Subtle and thought provoking. The "crimson hourglass" line works well in its evocation of blood, making this a surprisingly disturbing poem. -- MS

Thanks, MS

Yes and also, the word spider was never used - just implied in the poem. Only the female has an hour glass on her back - the more deadly of the species??

Thanks for your thoughtful comment. I appreciate all your effort.

hmmmm....

kinda dark, and definitely not a cliche happy ending!

loni balogna

yes, death is not happy....

but, for animal black widows, there must be some reason they do this - I've read they only kill if they mistake their mates for food? Human black widows, on the other hand, now that is evil!
