Tiger Walks the Links

Focused power - sheer perfection
Tiger Woods' swing

Tiger's decided to change his swing,
No matter if it takes two years.
His goal is to make better,
What lesser mortals think supreme.

As Tiger walks the links,
With his calm, determined strides,
When he smiles into the camera,
I feel communion with his soul.

Why am I so empathetic
With a person so exalted?
What in me feels close to one
Whose competition is himself?

If I work hard forever,
With my most fervent devotion,
At what I love and have some skill,
I will never be the best.

I may be just an adoring fan,
Or someone envious of his talent.
It could be his need for perfection
Mirrors a similar need in me.

I may never know the connection,
But when my soul walks with Tiger,
And I watch him attain the unattainable,
I share his sense of accomplishment.

great write

nice poem joyce
i love the lines "As Tiger walks the links,
With his calm, determined strides,"
just like a tiger in his cage. his mind being the cage. wouldnt you love to know what goes on in his mind to be that great?
Linda

his mother gave him peace...

Thanks, Linda, for your very interesting interpretation of that line. It fits very well. I feel Tiger's strengths came from two main sources:

Tiger's father gave him golf
And his mother gave him peace...

What his mother gave him was equally important to his father's training. I understand she taught him mind calming techniques, which are most likely either the most important facet of his character and, thus, his game, or one of the most important.

Thanks for the positive input. I enjoy and admire your poems, too.

A Great Write

Joyce.

Wow! this piece really resonates with me. For sure, the need to attain 'Perfection' A strong, almost overwhelming force than 'drives' us to achieve. And i guess that if you have that drive, sucess will eventually find you. Though the irony is, (personally speaking anyway) that this sense of 'Perfection' never truly satifies the person because what you achieve is purely a momentary sense of accomplishment, and then you strive onwards toward the next goal, whilst not enjoying your current sucess. Also with perfectionism, nothing is ever good enough for the person. So, in a sense you dont enjoy your own sucesses anyway.
There is so much i'd like to say about this piece, and the subject, especially involving 'Sport' and success, though i would probally ramble on a bit...

Finally, the last lines- 'And i watch him.........accomplishment'
Truly wonderful- to be able to share in anothers sucess!

Great write!
Thought provoking.

DEbs

stop and smell the roses...

Thanks Debs,

Yes, many successful people work all the time and never seem to enjoy life (perfectionists are hard task masters to themselves). Tiger seems to be an exception. Perhaps the strength his parents taught him in mind and body help him retain his equilibrium even with such a driven temperament.

Thanks for the postive input. Your poems are great and I look forward to reading them.

Wow ,Joyce this poem is a great accomplishment in itself I agree with Debs write,
this is a great piece of poetry and I enjoyed it from start to finish thanks for sending it in from Willow

thanks, willow

I enjoyed writing it since I follow Tiger avidly and understand his drive. I always want to understand why I feel the way I do and writing about it seems to help. I appreciate your comment a lot.
