Broken Girl

You see that girl over there,
The one with tears in her eyes?
Don’t you wonder why she stares at the ground,
Instead of praising the beautiful skies?

You can tell from her image, she’s broken,
But what remains to the world unknown,
Is what could have hurt her soul so badly,
To make her skin match the color of her bones.

As she sat down alone before me,
I sensed that I knew her face.
I couldn’t help but watch her ways,
As she presented her sadness with grace.

And though I watched her silently,
She must have felt my longing stare.
For her dark brown eyes looked up at me,
And I was hit with confusion and despair.

I recognized their melancholy,
And their lack of affection and love.
I recognized their emptiness,
And their need of a gift from above.

I wish I could call out to her,
And from her problems set her free.
But you see, I know she won’t reply,
For that broken girl is me.
