A night with the dead (a longing for release)
The rain taps on the brim of my hat as I gaze out over the stones.
So many faces that only the years have known.
Loves and lives all shattered and lost.
Two centuries worth of memories, hopes, and dreams.
Pain swells inside of me like a rabid beast.
Waiting to consume me at my next breath.
I turn my eyes upon the green grass.
Feeling sorry for there was no chance at a future.
The souls of the hundreds within this centuries old ground of the dead.
They shiver and they shake as they turn their age worn heads.
"Do not fear!" they say to me. "For our kingdom is, has been, and always will be!"
"You will not have to fret, and ponder on what might have been. Just come, our son, and lay your head upon this land. Let us sooth you, and take away some of your pain. You have fought well in your time. You have loved well. And you have known the loss as only a soldier, and a battered lover would. We know all too well what it is you seek. You may not have it yet, just take another drink."
