Visit From A Butterfly

Visit From A Butterfly
By Paul McCann
Sunlight settled the places in the garden where children play .
I was working in the flower bed in the middle of the day .
The parrots and honeyeaters were inquisitive of me .
They wandered near to where I dug and then flew up in a tree .
The magpies were much bolder and pecked around where I had dug .
They found worms in the soil and even the odd garden slug .
I noticed how the pets were included in the children’s games .
Around the pigeons neck they placed a necklace of daisy chains .
A butterfly in gentle flutter beautifully floated by .
I clasped my hands upon the purple wings of a butterfly .
In my hands I had captured a coloured fluttering surprise .
I showed my kids what I had,
they could hardly believe their eyes .
They screamed with a lump in their throat
and they were dumbfounded too .
At the sight of a butterfly who appeared out of the blue .
They all held the butterfly and felt its fluttering power .
Then we let it go again as it passed over to a flower .
