The Island of the Snake Warrior (Chitto Tustenuggee)
Snake Warrior, his island sits
A coral fort above this marsh
His energy, it still emits
From his lifetime's battles harsh.
The breeze blows steady, seaward bound
Through lily pads and Spanish Moss
Hides the cries and battle sounds
And ghosts of lives in battles lost.
Seminole Wars he bravely fought
To set his tribe and people free
But so much misery was wrought
In the pages of our history.
Now he haunts the humid haze
His spirit, banyan trees enshroud
Reigning here with steady gaze
Standing tall, a warrior proud.
If you should chance visit this park
A place of great tranquility
Recall the deeds as you take your walk
Of brave Seminole chief Tustenuggee.

You set up a nice
scene here. Makes me want to go and read more about that group of indians and the conditions they lived in. Right now I wonder how they handled the hurricanes, it's interesting to think about how the indigenous peoples lived. raskin
Thanks Raskin!
I wrote this after walking at a park (The Snake Warrior's Island) in Miramar, FL. It is a beautiful, tranquil place named after the Snake Warrior, who lived in the early 19th century and fought in the Seminole Wars. Not sure how the Seminoles handled hurricanes. Glad you liked my historical poem!
