Empty Room

the mauve curtains flap in front of the open windows in the empty room
dust scurries rhythmically across the grimy wooden floor
the stench of mildew fills the thick air within the room
mice scuttle to their holes in the cracking walls
the ceiling creaks with each gust of wind blowing through the chilled room
the sun moves closer to dusk
the door remains locked, the knob not turnable, the key is lost
