A Promise to God

Protecting his woman is what a man is supposed to do.
But the knife I sleep with protects me from you.

It’s like trying to recover from a bad dream you’re in.
Once you wake up, you know you’ll have to go back again.

You like to intimidate me when you’re in a funk.
But the night I threatened you with a knife, you jumped like a punk.

It gets harder and harder trying to contain this anger inside.
But the mere thought of your physical violence makes me swallow all of my pride.

Each time I left, I love you is what I heard.
But not this time, because actions speak louder than words.

I made a promise to God, and he knows it’s true.
That this time when I leave, I will never go back to you.
