On The Battlefield
On the battlefield I stand
Watching the blood fall from man's hand.
Seeing my husband in the midst of it all,
Standing with his gun proud and tall.
The other men stand all around.
They too stand tall and proud.
Blood is splattered all around
Like raindrops on the ground.
My heart is wretching
As I stand watching
Each soldier going down.
For the states they die
While young women,
Like I,
Continue to cry.
The things I see are petrifying,
But not nearly as terrifying
As my husband's body falls to the ground
Amongst the other bodies found all around.
I hear something leave my throat,
But its unheard through the roar.
Before I knew what I was doing,
I grabbed my husband's gun
And started to run.
"What are you doing?!" were the shouts I heard
But I let them be ignored.
For the states I would die,
While young women continue to cry.
I couldn't just lie and do nothing
So I started shooting.
A soldier I had become
Against my own wishes, it wasn't fun.
I started to think, "What am I doing?"
I'm a lady, you see.
What am I doing?
This isn't me!
But there I was on the ground in the mud and dirt
Rolling around in a skirt.
For the states I would die,
While young women continue to cry.
It was mewho stood and fought.
I helped our freedom be bought.
I'm a hero, you see.
I now have a legacy
One I want?
Maybe.
Either way I fought for you,
And I fought for me.
For the states I would greatly have died.
Even though young women continue to cry.
