Dusty old jar
The jar sat there
on the shelf, painted
with characters
long forgotten.
Hidden between books,
dusty old knowledge
of times past.
The tragedies, comedies
surrounded the vessel.
Ignored, taken for granted
a mere ornament
to sit quietly on the ledge.
At night when all was asleep
the characters would come
alive, dance, twirl
rise and fall exhausted
when the sun came up.
No one saw the magic
in the dusty old jar,
only a jar. Sometimes, though
curiosity takes hold
for no particular reason,
only to see. Once the magic
is seen then what?

A winter rose wilted, reflecting one's once cherrished love. Never will that flower again bloom after death.

"Dusty old knowledge"
Loved the enigma of "dusty old knowledge".

knowledge
I think old knowledge can be disregarded for the new and shiny and I think there is worth that is overlooked. Thanks for reading. raskin
Why question wonderment
Lynnette,
That would be tantamount to looking a gift horse in the mouth. If you were granted the imagination to see the nocturnal show put on by these painted figures, embrace it, why question it and if it means more than that?

lovely poem. I can see those dancing figures twirling in the moonlight and someone peeking out at them. Beautifully done. joyce

Help me here
Lynnette... What I got out of this is a there is a very beautiful person with a lot of zest for life and charisma to offer but know one sees that they only see the dusty old jar or the outer facade of this person... And once someone does see all the beauty and magic within this person... They take them for grated... Kind of like been there done that... Am I doing mushrooms or am I right... I am stil a novice at poetry and I am trying my best to understand... The Greek mythology catagory is throwing me off somewhat... Why Greek mythology???
Help me here!
It is a beautiful poem ... I really like it ... I hope I am reading it right!
Great job! Much better than some stupid rumor poem!

Thanks for the thoughtful comment
As far as the greek mythology goes, the greeks and many ancient cultures decorated their pots with stories, myths. I think by using their pots on a regular basis they may have kept the old knowledge current. In our culture there is a disregard for the old sometimes good sometimes not so good. People can be disregarded like that as well. As people age their minds are still active, busy, imaginative although their bodies my be dusty, forgotten. This speaks I hope to what happens in the mind of the dusty old relic. There is also a personal layer here that I don't share. You did well interpreting this Ray. raskin
I should have combined
These two but oh well. Did you read the One list I wrote up of some of the poems I like. I hope it is entertaining. raskin
