half empty
Sitting on the front steps of the porch
I kept looking up at the flag in the yard.
Standing at attention as it does
when the wind blows right.
I watched it wave
but at present I didn't wave back.
It flew at half staff today.
I came out here for air
after I heard, thinking.
I sat contemplating the flag,
my country, myself.
My eyes lingered on the
position of the flag,
not up but not down either.
To me it looked like a big glass,
half empty,
like me.

good poem raskin
I enjoyed this one raskin about a flag a different subject to the normal, which is refreshing to read about something different,
but I dont think you are half empty like you say in the end of your poem, you write some pretty good stuff I enjoy your poems from Willow
thankyou
No, I'm not half empty. I was thinking of the soldiers that had died and just felt sad for their families. Loss is not easy. raskin

I am so sorry raskin I got your poem wrong I can see it now you mentioned it ,yes it is devastating for their families to lose their loved ones through dedication to their countries.
I apologise for my misinterperation,

patriotism
If patriotism is unwavering support for all of this admin's policies, then few of us really have it anymore. I think patriotism is more a support for the underlying principles of our government and way of life. I like your image of the flag at half mast and someone evaluating how he feels about what is happening. I don't think you are really half empty, just longing for different ways of doing things.
Thanks for writing a thoughtful poem that captures what many of us are torturing ourselves about.
yes, I agree
I believe there is a saying about principles over policy, but really I suppose they should inspire policy. Principles are good to guide, good to lead with. Sometimes I think people loose sight of their principles they get gummed up. I think reflection and reassessment are good and that's part of this poem. Loss and reflection. raskin
