Shards of Ice
Shards of ice tinkling against the shore
piling up, layer after layer.
Clear, crystalline prisms
gems of the shoreline
lying exposed in the cold.
The beach devoid of activity
silent except for the ice chiming.
Frigid waves undulate slowly
in a relentless procession
to the shore, curling in
splashing, building up the icy shore.
A lone surfer stands on his board
deliberately riding the wave in
colliding with the shore.
Each wave a cold meditation,
a dream of movement.

Shards of Ice
A beautiful "collision" of imagery and feeling! Powerful!

ice
Thanks, on the lake a thin layer of ice forms then the waves bring it in to break on the shoreline into shards. It really is beautiful and looking at it reminded me of stuff. raskin
To rhyme or not to rhyme?
I much prefer your free verse work such as this. It allows images to flow without struggling within the strait jacket of rhyme.
SHARDS
You must live close the a lake to experience the mood of this poem, I live on the edge of a beautiful lake and it is as if the lake keeps spitting out the shards, stalling off the final seal of ice. You have put in flowing words what I have experienced but lacked your ability to express so beautifully. Thank you, Ezmerelda
Thank you
I grew up on a large body of water and visit frequently. Each season brings a new mood and the water expresses different moods within those seasons. This was just one mood, one moment. raskin
