That Damn Hare

that damn hare

here my children rest asleep
warm and out of sight
hid in the dark from farmers light
protected in their white

one by one i knock on them
“is everything alright ? ”
no reply or slightest peep
they're tucked in for the night

i must beware
cause soon that hare
will think that he can take

all to his own
what’s not for loan
something that he can’t make

i’m sure as heck not falling
for what he said last spring
“you look so tired, go take a break
i’ll care for you offspring”

next thing i knew
they were all gone
just drips of colored paint

upon the floor
on out the door
done so without constraint

no not this time
be forced to find
them strewn about the yard

in hiding spots
for human tots
to take without regard

here atop my lovely brood
that hare no where insight
a close watch must be keep by me
i’m quite prepared to fight

i always knew
something was wrong
the hare was like a mole

he did not peck
or strut about
he lived down in a hole

what’s that you say
there’s someone here
and that i have to hurry

please watch my kids
i’m off to meet
a man they call Cadbury

there in a room i sat
all by myself
waiting patiently

but why so long
where has he gone
what does he want with me

oh my god
what have i done
i feel i’ve lost my head

but its to late
they are all gone
and soon be painted red

Cadbury walked
away with them
to protect them i did fail

i should have known
cause as he turned
out popped a cotton-tail
