Mosquitoes

Stagnant pool of mosquito infested water
Eating at my flesh, draining my blood.
Buzzing in my ears driving me mad
The build up of emotional pain over time
Not letting them go for fear of the repercussions.
Thousands of blood suckers flying
Constantly around my head, taunting me
Swat and miss, swat again. Taunting continues
Dodging just out of my reach.
Landing ever so lightly on my skin
Teeth piercing my flesh, pumping poison
Into my veins and my blood into their minute bodies.
Hand raised to squash, quickly they take off.
Damn, I missed again.
The ridicule continues mercilessly
Incessant buzzing, biting, eating away
At my mind, driving me insane!
Finally having had more than I can take
Slowly I raise my arm and with
Lightning speed, I swat one last time
I connect, flattening the biggest, the most annoying.
Blood, my blood pouring from its tiny little body
I watch and wonder how something
So small can possibly cause so much pain!
The buzzing stops abruptly and finally
If only for the moment…
I am at peace.
