Where Are Your Old Friends?
"Where are your old friends now?" the ad asks me
Assaults me
I know where they are
They're talking to me, typing blurbs of messages
We're old, my god, we're old
I've loved and lost
and I've gotten on your nerves
because just as you lacked the spine to ask him
You lacked to spine to give me tough love
And when I got hurt, shut up, shut down
I didn't know what else to do
and memories with chewed down nails
they've been clawing at this hole in my gut
While you stand and tell me from a distance
"I think I like him."
The "don't get involved" is implied
Oh, because we all know I'm the reason you had a dagger in your chest
And the girl in sweatshirts with the wide face that spilts with smiles
She's got a place in his name 'cause I drove him away
I'm sorry
I'm so sorry, for you
And the smallest bit for me
So shut me up before I get any further
This reminiscing is killing us
And self-pity has knocked my legs from under me before
So before I watch them dance, as little boy holds big girl close
And I wonder if it'll be the same feeling again
Stop me.
Please, stop me, before those little blurbs become short and bitter
and i've driven the last of you away
