Adrift

Tossed about in uncertain seas
Snatch a breath, so pure and necessary
before the next frothing white cap
slams me under into disorienting darkness
Is that a predator I felt brush against my leg?
Or maybe a little luck is left to me
Nothing more than a log, long washed to sea
Brief clarity as my lungs begin to burn anew
Flail around, where did that mindless preserver go?
Air, I need more, which way is the surface? Struggle against
the force of waves, open air must be that direction
Lifted up into the heavens, no, not heaven, just oxygen again
Caressingly buoyant water upon which I now float
Heaven enough at this point, Has the sea decided to relent?
Take a respite from my battering? I can’t tell anymore
Is this all life has ever been? Are those sweet images I see
simply the ravings of one resigned to endless torment?
Another breath, and yet another
Ocean’s implacable nature, she is not angry at me
Pulled, pushed, moved, prodded, cajoled by
a wickedly glowing sickle, she has no option whether
to be the sea just as I have no choice
but to ride the swell where it leads

oh wow

this is really really good. it can mean so many different things. i like it.

Thank You

Thank you for your comment. It does mean a few different things, some of which weren't evident until I was writing it. That's part of what I love about writing. It can be as much of a surprise to the author as it can to the reader.

Think for yourselves and let others enjoy the privilege to do so, too.

very moving and thought provoking, Ta2

I was very moved by your images. I was impressed by their depth. The glowing sickle - moon, death, fate, many alternatives came to mind. Life in poetry. Beautifully done. Before I read your poem, I read your comment to jezza's poem and was impressed with it. I, too, am surprised by what I write. If you'd like, you could find my poem called, "poems are magic", and tell me what you think. I love the feeling you get from being surprised at yourself - I've never felt that before I started writing in February. Keep up the great work!
