The Package

The Package

Big things come in small packages
And that’s what he gave her
A small package
No special occasion
No holiday treat
No special event
Not even a gift of appreciation
He did it-just because
Beautiful little box
Adorned with precious jewels
Wrapped in silk
And topped with a lovely lace bow
Beautiful-Just like her
She had:
A-musement
I-ntoxication
D-elightfulness
S-atisfaction
He gave it to her
The package
Something she could never buy from the store
Oh, this was much more
No way to return this gift
No way to get her money back
No way to trade it in
But it was ‘one size fits all”
So it wasn’t too big
Nor too small
The only thing that she can do
Is to give it away
How selfishly selfish
How thoughtfully thoughtless
He gave it to her
The package
He didn’t stick around long enough
For her to say ‘thank you’
He knew that he’d be gone tomorrow
And that she would soon
Follow

The Package

I really love your metaphor in this poem. It is a refreshing way to look at it after twenty-five years of living it!
