Lies
It seems they're all I've ever heard
Lies
Told by needy souls
With wells too deep
To ever be filled
And yet I tried
And still do
Big lies
Little white lies
Omissions
Stories carefully woven like fine linen
Lies told so many times that they become
Truth
To those who told them
So why do people lie
And why do people who lie
Expect
That they should deserve belief
From those who are honest with them
Adults
Living like the boy who cried wolf
Why do they lie?
Perhaps for attention
Pity
Or absolution
For past good doings
Or selfishly
For their own suffering
Control
Maybe they feel their lives are without
Purpose
Or direction
So they attempt
To control
Those who are willing to listen
Or care
Lies
Make their lives more interesting
Less flawed
Make them feel better about themselves
Or soften guilt
And hide them from shame and disappointment
Do they believe that we are incapable of deciphering
Fact
From fiction?
If they believe that
They're lying to themselves, too
In their world
It's not our game
And it's not our rules
They don't apply
Where's Waldo?
Hide and seek
Pin the tail on the donkey
My mothers' words
Still burn in my ears
Your word is the one thing
No one can ever take away from you
It determines how people deal with you in life
It determines how we are remembered in death
If you lie to one
You lie to all
Once you start lying
You can't stop
Because one lie
Always leads to another
Each time the lie comes up
And you don't admit the truth
Is another lie
On top of the lie you just told
To hide the other lies
Lies
Hurt feelings
Cause loss
End relationships
Kill trust
So why lie to someone
Who loves you dearly?
