Past And Present
In the not so distance past
when a womans work was harder,
her clothes were sewn to last
home made produce in the larder.
The laundry scrubbed so clean
on a washing board with soap,
the whites were the whitest seen
pegged out on a line made of rope.
Wax polishing of the parlour floor
and the furniture inside,
scrubbing the step by the door
with elbow grease and pride.
The mats outside were hastily taken
for dust to be beaten away,
the tablecloth vigorously shaken
with the crumbs of yesterday
"Three cheers"for the modern appliance
"Farewell "to the kitchen sink,
"Hoorah" for the age of science
We`ve now time to sit down and think.

Nostalgia..
I recently visited a local museum..somewhat against my will lol!, but found myself drawn to many amazing things of the past. Amongst them an old washing board and some photo's of old bathing machines! It truly was enlightening to see how people lived their lives in the past..its hard to image those days in a way. It seems so far removed from how we live our lives. Not sure how i would have coped back then!
Praise indeed to modern appliances!
DEbs :.)
thanks Debs
thankyou debs for the comment,
yes My mother had to wash clothes by hand with one of those washing boards and I have done it also ,
as in school we had laundry classes and we had to wash like that all the teachers clothes, back when I
lived in Scotland it was no joke I can tell you,we had no hot water in the house just a cold tap the laundry house was outside in another outbuilding that we had to share with 3 other neighbours ,we each had our days to use it ,and there was a boiler in there and a wringer and a scrubbing board,my mother used to be in there all day washing our weekly clothes, than goodness for modern appliances indeed ,glad you liked my poem .I have written another about all this which I will send in tomorrow named Way Back Then, thanks again Debs from Willow
I Just Think...
It's amazing! I think women worked really hard back then.. Really hard!!The only memory i have is of my grandmother scrubbing the tiles on her front porch...down on her hands and knees. I was only a little girl but it always stuck in my memory...
I look foward to your other write Willow.
