There was a jolly sailor man
his name was Sam Mcphee
his ship was docked at Portsmouth
from a long time out at sea.

With his shipmate Billy Cree
and all geared up for fun
they stepped out in Portsmouth
with a belly full o `rum

Sam Maphee was a handsome lad
he met a wench to woo
for ladies in those parts
were all but a few

But he was taken up with her
and promised he would wed
and so she gave her all to him
but he had to sail instead.

He had left her there with child
to manage on her own
just praying for the day
when Sam would come home .

Now two years had gone by
when she heard from Sam Mcphee
he pleaded he was sorry
and shacked up with Billy Cree.
