(The 88)

How to begin this
A scene from old
Picture perfect memory
Where best but where
I feel it most
A million multi-colored
Leaves of autumns’ reign
Spread across the vastness
What is seemingly never ending
Fields of our back yard
Some twenty acres long
Such an eternity ago
Though as clear as glass
At this very moment in my mind
Fourteen lines and I…
I haven’t even made it to your smile
Armed with nothing more than rakes
We set forth to conquer
Regain the yard that’s ours
Take back the muddy hills
The overgrown forest
And I still can’t get the words right
Small mountains formed
Of green and yellow
Red and brown crunching leaves
We built them with only our rakes
With a broken wheel burrow
From sun up to the laughter of the moon
You and I my darling beautiful
I just can’t forget this moment
For some reason…
It’s there
Though the past is non-existent
I relive this every night
This reoccurring memory
Woven into my nights dream
Funny how
I just don’t know why
And below the stars
A bon fire
From nature’s smallest
Most important work of art
In the fires glow
A watchful and approving moon
You and I
Side by side
We watched our fire burn
And with a million
Multi-colored leaves
We fed the fire ‘til it died

I don't know why

but I feel sad and happy at the same time...a poem so pure it's given me goosebumps ♥
