Randy's Graduation Poem

I wrote this for my autistic nephew Randy... He is currently 19 and going to college

Wow!...Look at you!
You finished School!
What will you do?
Go jump in a pool?

So now you’re cool!
What else will you do?
Because you’ve only begun
And you’re not really through!

I hope you can hear me,
Randy...I'm talking to you!
Yes…You can learn more!
Like…how to make a shoe!

"A shoe? Oh what a bore!
Keep talking Uncle Barney
And soon I will snore.
I buy my shoes… at the shoe store!"

But someone made the shoes
And sold them to the store
And without shoes…
Our feet will get sore!

So I appreciate him
And what he has done.
In my book Randy…
The shoe man's number one!

Okay… Shoes are out.
So tell me what’s in!
You have to do something,
To do nothing's…a sin!

You can be on T.V.
And give us the weather
Or be a leather salesman,
Because the shoe man needs leather!

You can be an inventor
And make a machine,
That lets us play games
And keeps our house clean!

You can be a dog catcher
Or make catchers’ mitts
Or be a shoe salesman!
Whatever shoe fits!!

It’s your choice Randy,
Whatever you do,
But please do something,
Because we need you!

You can do what you want,
And you can do a lot!
And what it takes to do it,
That’s what you’ve got!

To learn to write poems…
I had to learn how to rhyme!
It’s not really hard,
It just takes some time!

Before you counted to eight,
You had to count to seven
And before you counted to twelve,
You had to count to eleven!

And look at you now!
You can count to a million
And if you keep on going,
You will count to a trillion!

It’s fun to learn,
So don’t be afraid!
If you have trouble learning,
I will come to your aid!

If you do make shoes,
Then make them with passion!
And you can be sure…that
I’ll wear your new fashion!

You make this world,
A much better place
If you don’t make the shoes,
But you make the shoelace!

So do what you want,
And do what you will,
But make your shoes,
…Hard to fill!

Very Moving..

And also clevery written.

This has a special place in my heart, having worked in the care industry (Autism) in the past and studyed the psycology and behaviour patterns of Autism.

It is so lighthearted, yet so true in explaining the meaning behind things to those with Autism.
For they see things from a different perspective, a different angle and can have a completely different take on the world. I guess it also depends on where they are in relation to the Autistic spectrum, as in what they are capable of achieving and those things that need more work.
In fact-Some of the adults i worked with had the most amazing talents, artistic, musical and mathmatical, geniuses really! so there is no limitations on learning, other than social interactions they may need help with.

Thanks for sharing this, it has got me thinking again! and a lovely poem to write for Randy.

DEbs

Blessed Uncle

Joyce thank you so much for your kind words... However I am the one that feels blessed to have such a fun and loving special nephew in my life... He is so full of love for everyone that he meets... We have a very special relationship... He makes me laugh and although he does not really laugh he gets the biggest grin and I wish I had a dolaar for every time I heard him say "You're funny Uncle Barney"

Thanks again,

Ray

Another great poem!
A good friend of mine has an autistic son who is 19 also.
He just got a job recycling for families here in our town. He just might be the happiest person i know.
I love the way you wrote this for him. You have a warm heart.

Autistic children

Autistic children are all kind hearted and They are loyal andwilling to do anything they can to help... They don't like crowds but want to feel like they belong... If I could I would hire all autistic employees!

Thanks for the Compliment and if you want to ... show this poem to your friend!

Thanks, RAY

wonderful!

This is a wonderful poem. It expresses the need to welcome and acknowledge the contributions everyone can make and what it took for your nephew to make it to college. Having struggled with a learning disability, though no where near as tough as his, I am fully aware of how much work it must have taken and what a great accomplishment this is.

Dgoldbaum8, yes!

Again yobarney i love your poem !!!
and Dgold...i too have struggled with a learning disability...that i only recently found out about. it has validated so many reasons "why" for me... i think through the hardships of the LD...my love for poetry "came out".
